What is XRF?

XRF stands for X-Ray Fluorescence and is a technique to analyse the elements that make up a sample. The XRF uses a miniature X-ray tube to shine X-rays onto a sample (which could be a rock, an alloy or even a polymer) and the atoms that make up that sample shine back with their own unique fluorescence.

A detector is then used to measure that fluorescence to analyse which elements are in the sample (i.e. Iron (Fe), Copper (Cu), Gold (Au), etc.) and how much of each element is present.

XRF is a fast, non-destructive technique that is available in small, field-portable handheld analysers, and is used widely for applications from scrap metal sorting to exploration and mining, and even gold metal recycling.
